About Us

Drug-Free Action Alliance is a statewide, private non-profit prevention agency founded in 1987. We educate key leaders on the problems facing their communities and provide the resources needed to take action.

We deliver up-to-date information and develop initiatives that serve the immediate needs of those working to prevent substance abuse. While young people are our primary target population, we also engage in efforts to promote healthy lifestyles for all Ohioans. We form partnerships with businesses, community members, substance abuse prevention professionals, policy makers, law enforcement, school personnel, and, most importantly, parents.

Providing Leadership

Drug-Free Action Alliance's mission to provide leadership and foster networks to promote safe and drug free communities throughout Ohio is accomplished through the following strategies:

  1. Provide statewide and community environmental changes to reduce substance abuse
  2. Increase public awareness of substance abuse and its harmful effects and the role of Drug-Free Action Alliance in substance abuse prevention.
  3. Help to develop the statewide prevention infrastructure to reduce substance abuse through collaborations, community coalitions and state level groups.

  • Participated in selection of schools for national drug free recognition
 

1989
  • Began Ohio Red Ribbon Celebration
 

1990
  • Held first statewide conference
  • Leadership role in formation of Ohio Alcohol and Drug Policy Alliance
 

1991
  • Name changed to Ohio Parents for Drug Free Youth
  • Hired first paid staff
  • Began Volunteers in Prevention
 

1992
  • Resource Room established through Ohio Prevention and Education Resource
 

1993
  • Hired first paid Executive Director
 

1994
  • Received award from National Family Partnership for role in Red Ribbon Celebration
 

1995
  • Formed Statewide Prevention Coalition Association
  • Implemented Communities of Hope pilot program
 

1996
  • Ohio College Initiative to Reduce High Risk Drinking started with 19 participating colleges
 

1997
  • 10th anniversary
 

1998
  • The Statewide Prevention Coalition Association and the Ohio College Initiative to Reduce High Risk Drinking received Exemplary Program Awards from the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services
 

1999
  • Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws Initiative developed - "Parents Who Host, Lose The Most: Don't be a party to teenage drinking"
 

2001
  • "Parents Who Host, Lose The Most: Don't be a party to teenage drinking" received Exemplary Prevention Program Award From Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services
 

2002
  • "Parents Who Host, Lose The Most: Don't be a party to teenage drinking" received National Exemplary Promising Practice Award from Center for Substance Abuse Prevention
  • Georgetown University selected Ohio Parents for Drug Free Youth to be lead agency in Ohio to participate in the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth
 

2003
  • Statewide Prevention Coalition Association received national award from Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America as the Outstanding Statewide Coalition
 

2004
  • Youth Philanthropy Council developed
  • Hope Taft Prevention Advocacy Award established and presented to Senator Mike DeWine
 

2005
  • Agency name changed to Drug-Free Action Alliance
  • 2nd Annual Hope Taft PreventionAdvocacy Award presented to Congressman Rob Portman
  • Coalition Against Meth formed and trained community and faith-based coalitions
  • United Way of Central Ohio selected Drug-Free Action Alliance to manage Know! initiative

2006

  • Began Ohio Center for Coalition Excellence
  • 3rd Annual Hope Taft Prevention Advocacy Award presented to Ohio State University President Karen Holbrook
