Ohio's Opiate Epidemic Takes Center Stage

Gov. John Kasich announced an additional $36 million in federal and local funds to be used toward combating prescription drug abuse in Ohio last week at an opiate abuse summit, co-sponsored by the Ohio Association of County Behavioral Health Authorities (OACBHA) and the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS).
Kasich said these funds will cover treatment and rehabilitation for those addicted to prescription drugs. He also announced the creation of Opiate Task Forces in 23 Ohio counties. Kasich also expressed how funds will cover treatment and rehabilitation for those addicted to these drugs.

Of the 8th graders that drink, 77% report consuming Alcopops, compared to only 30% of drinkers aged 25 to 30.
Alcopops are classified as beer in Ohio, even though they are an alcohol product that contains distilled spirits. Beer is taxed at 18¢ per gallon, while mixed beverage taxes are $1.20 per gallon – a six times higher rate. This misclassification contributes to the underage drinking problem in Ohio, as research shows that higher prices reduce underage drinking.
Drug-Free Action Alliance Policy Statement on Alcopops: Alcopops have been classified by the state as beer for tax and regulatory purposes. Drug-Free Action Alliance urges the State of Ohio to classify Alcopops as mixed beverages, thereby helping to prevent underage drinking in Ohio.

The Great Debate: Should Parents Serve Their Teens Alcohol?
The question of whether (or not) parents should allow their teens to drink has long been a topic of debate. And recently, it has become a hot topic in the media as well; one that is stirring conversation and emotion.
The Wall Street Journal addressed the topic in their March 8th article: Dad, I Prefer the Shiraz: Do Parents Who Serve Teens Beer and Wine at Home Raise Responsible Drinkers?
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/3041445/ns/today-parenting
NBC’s Today Show also examined the question in the following recent news package: Should Parents Let Their Teens Drink Alcohol at Home? (Scroll down under ‘Parenting’ to find the correct video).
Drug-Free Action Alliance strongly believes that youth under the age of 21 should not consume alcohol, under any circumstance.
