TAKE THE
Big Bowl Vote 2011
Based on NFL Super Bowl Commercials

Take part in the Big Bowl Vote and make it a teachable moment for everyone! As millions of underage youth watch the Super Bowl each year, they see more ads for alcohol than any other single product. Studies show that the more youth are exposed to alcohol advertising, the more likely they are to drink (drink to excess and drink more often).

The Big Bowl Vote is an informal survey, given to middle and high school students the Monday morning following Super Bowl Sunday, to gauge what commercials they find most memorable and most appealing. Download the Big Bowl Questionnaire Tool Kit for implementation at www.DrugFreeActionAlliance.org.

Parents will become informed about the impact of alcohol advertising and students will learn how to read between the lines of advertising (media literacy).

The National Football League’s Super Bowl XLV is scheduled for
February 6, 2011, with television coverage on FOX.

Drug-Free Action Alliance
Coalition Spotlight

Featuring:
Lake County Building Our Assets Together (BOAT) Community Coalition

Lake County Building Our Assets Together (BOAT) Community Coalition is in this month’s Coalition Spotlight for their outstanding participation in the 2010 Leadership Institute; an intensive, year-long program of in-person and on-line trainings, guided implementation in the field of prevention, conference participation and presentations, and formative evaluation.

Representing the BOAT Community Coalition was Coordinator Rae Grady along with Lt. Mike Shank of the Village of Perry Police Department. “Lt. Shank and I learned so much from the folks who represented the four other community coalitions. It was wonderful to hear stories of the same struggles that people are facing when trying to change community norms and long held ideas about young people and alcohol use,” said Grady.

CADCA Video Contest Reopened!

Calling all aspiring film producers and actors! It's time to dust off your video camera and put your creativity to the test. CADCA has launched a video contest to see who can create the most entertaining and creative video about CADCA and CADCA's Forum.

The winner will get a free Wii system!
The new deadline is January 17, 2011.

Interested? Here’s what you have to do:

1- Create a 2-3 minute video that answers one question: WHY SHOULD SOMEONE COME TO CADCA’S NATIONAL LEADERSHIP FORUM? You can be as silly, funny or clever as you want to be. For example, maybe you sing a tune about why people should come to the CADCA Forum or maybe you act out a funny skit. The possibilities are endless!

2- Post it to YouTube using your own YouTube account. Remember to make the video public so others can view it.

3- After you’ve posted your video to YouTube, send the link to your video to nmartinez@cadca.org by no later than Jan. 17th, 2011.

Here’s how the winning video will be chosen:

During CADCA’s National Leadership Forum next month, attendees will have the opportunity to view all of the video submissions at the CADCA exhibit booth and vote on which one they like the best. We will announce the winner during the Awards Luncheon on the last day of the Forum. The winner will take home a new Wii game system!

The contest is open to all youth younger than 21 who are involved with a local community coalition. For questions, contact Natalia Martinez Duncan at 703-706-0560, Ext. 256 or via e-mail at: nmartinez@cadca.org.

National Survey on Drug Use Finds Increased
Marijuana Use Among Eighth, Tenth
and Twelfth Graders

The 2010 Monitoring the Future (MTF) Survey results, released last month by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the University of Michigan, showed an increase in marijuana use among all grades measured in the survey (eighth, tenth and twelfth graders). Research also revealed that more youth are smoking marijuana on a daily basis, with 6.1 percent of high school seniors, 3.3 percent of high school sophomores and 1.2 percent of eighth graders reporting daily use, compared to last year’s rates of 5.2 percent, 2.8 percent, and 1.0 percent, respectively. Among twelfth graders, marijuana use is at its highest point since the early 1980’s. In addition, the survey found that fewer tenth and twelfth graders perceive regular marijuana use as harmful, suggesting that marijuana use among youth may continue its upward trend in future years.
