The Great American Smoke Out

Opportunities to -

Encourage individuals to quit using tobacco products

The American Cancer Society’s Great American Smoke Out will once again be observed on the third Thursday of November.  On this day, people will be challenged to quit smoking for at least one day in hopes that they might quit for good.  Research tells us that smokers experience more success when they receive support.  With more than 43 million U.S. adult smokers, it is important to provide vital support to help individuals kick the habit.

Become familiar with new tobacco trends

While smoking tobacco use is on the decrease, smokeless tobacco, cigars, pipes and hookahs (waterpipes) use are on the increase.  Take time to communicate clear messages about the dangers of smoking and other forms of tobacco use, which are often thought to be less harmful.

  • Smokeless Tobacco  According to a report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services, smokeless tobacco use among boys 12-17 is increasing.  Orbs and Sticks are alarming new products to recently hit the market. These flavored tobacco products look like gum and candy.
  • Hookah Smoke  Waterpipe tobacco smokers generally believe that it is less harmful than cigarette smoking because the water-filtration and extended hose serve as filters for harmful agents. Existing evidence shows they have many of the same health risks. This trend is growing rapidly especially on college campuses.
  • Electronic Cigarettes  Being hyped as safer, cheaper, cleaner and sometimes even, “dentist recommended,” electronic cigarettes have hit the marketplace as the newest smoking alternative.  These devices carry many risks especially for youth.

Advocate for sound public policy
